Apple’s AR/VR adventure started in 2017

Apple started setting the stage for an AR/VR device starting from WWDC 2017 when it brought ARKit augmented reality framework for iPhones and iPads. The framework allowed Apple developers to offer an immersive experience for users Ever since its 2017 keynote at the WWDC event, Apple has been continuously praising the AR/VR technology in the subsequent WWDC events, When Apple introduced its AR Studio app in 2017, it demonstrated a virtual LEGO set on the stage. With several such demonstrations and AR/VR related features introduced at its events, Apple laid the groundwork for AR/VR technology. A major breakthrough came on the hardware front when Apple introduced Face ID and Apple Memojis on iPhones and iPads. A LiDAR sensor was also added to the pro models of iPhones and iPads, which was seen only in driverless cars and lunar rover at that time. With LiDAR sensor on iPhones and iPads, Apple brought apps for decorating your room’s furniture virtually and seeing how it looks in virtual reality. Next, Apple introduced the capability of experiencing newly released products like the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR in augmented reality. This is how most users experience the products before they bought them. Apple’s ARKit allowed apps like Pocket Rocket to help users experience SpaceX rocket launches in augmented reality. ARKit remains a monumental release as it set the groundwork for Apple’s upcoming AR/VR headset. The webkit allowed app developers to develop apps that use Motion tracking, scene detection, light sensing, and camera integration. With ARKit, Apple also allowed developers to benefit from the face tracking feature that Apple uses to power Animojis and Memories to mimic facial expressions. All these advancements in AR/VR technology over the years have allowed Apple to prepare the groundwork for its upcoming headset. Apple is expected to unveil Reality Pro headset at its WWDC event which is scheduled for June 5 this year. It could be a  turning point for Apple as a company. As per rumours the latest device from the Cupertino-based company is expected to cost around $3,000 and come with three displays including two 4K Micro-LED panels. Also, it is reported that Apple is planning a cheaper AR/VR headset variant but it is not expected to undergo mass production before 2025.
