As reported by Triangle Business Journal, Apple has plans to occupy 281 acres of space through its development project under which it will construct commercial offices, a parking space, streets, and a central utility plant.
Details of Apple’s upcoming North Carolina campus
There will be a total of six buildings in the first phase of the project and these buildings will range from 12,352 square feet to 241,900 square feet. Apple filed a map for the development project to Wake County, showing the position of each building. The fire flow analysis in the filings also refers to “future” buildings indicating that Apple has plans to add more structures in the future other than the already mentioned ones in the map. The North Carolina campus will cost around $552 million to Apple and will be situated near Cary and Morrisville in Wake County’s northwest corner. In reference to the area occupied by the different structures under the project, Apple has mentioned that 700,000 square feet of space will be allocated to offices, 190,000 square feet for support structures, and around 3,000 square feet for parking. Apple said that in its new North Carolina Campus it will employ 2,700 employees within a decade and this number will increase to 3,000 gradually. The area on which Apple is planning to develop the campus is currently owned by a holding company named Acute Investments. As per records, Acute Investments has filed for quite a few environmental permits lately. Ever since Apple announced the North Carolina campus project in 2021, the company has remained tight-lipped about it. Moreover, in August 2022, a law firm representing Acute Investments requested that the documents and filings shared with Wake country for the project must be kept confidential. The law firm said that confidentiality will help it in preserving “trade secrets”. Apple is expected to receive $845 million in payroll tax relief until 2061 under Apple’s Job Development Investment Grant agreement with North Carolina if it is successful in achieving hiring and investment targets. For the year 2023, Apple has the target of employing a minimum of 126 employees to avoid defaulting on its commitments. Currently, Apple works in the state via a leased office building on the MetLife campus.
